Minor Ailments (Assessing and Prescribing)

Prior to incorporating activities that relate to Minor Ailments into practice, pharmacy professionals must declare to have participated in Minor Ailments Orientation (attended in person or have read the accompanying document). Pharmacy professionals must then notify the New Brunswick College of Pharmacists through a link on their online profile.

New Brunswick pharmacists may prescribe a drug, treatment or device for the treatment of a condition listed in Appendix 2 of the Regulations. Regulations 21.8(1) and 21.8(2) describe this authority in more detail. When searching the College online Directory of Pharmacy Professionals, authorization for Minor Ailments is indicated next to the pharmacy professional’s name and registration number.

Wholesaler

The New Brunswick College of Pharmacists has a duty to uphold and protect the public interest in the practice of pharmacy.

Wholesalers must register with the College (this applies to wholesalers whether their business is located in New Brunswick or not) and only distribute limited access drugs to pharmacies registered with the College in New Brunswick.  Limited access drugs pose enough potential risk to the public that they require either a prescription, professional intervention or supervision from a pharmacist at point of sale. Wholesalers must maintain registration, renew annually, and notify the College of any changes to contact information.

Wholesaler Registration Application [PDF]

  • Pharmacies in New Brunswick must only purchase limited access drugs from wholesalers that are registered with the College.  [Regulation 15.4]
