College Statement on Energy Drinks

Moncton, N.B. – The New Brunswick College of Pharmacists recognizes the progress made by the Ordre des pharmaciens du Québec (OPQ) in highlighting the potential health risks of supplemented food, such as energy drinks, for young people. Youth can be particularly vulnerable. In the interest of public safety, we agree with the OPQ that all retailers, not only pharmacies, consider how these products are made available to youth.

As the provincial regulator of pharmacy in New Brunswick, our legislated role is to ensure pharmacy professionals provide care in the best interests of the public. Our authority on restricting sales of products in retail settings would be subject to both provincial and federal legislation. The College would work collaboratively with the provincial Department of Health and with Health Canada to advance this or other public health measures.

“I encourage patients to speak with their pharmacist about their medications—whether it’s a new prescription or something they’ve been taking for some time. Understanding how a medication works and checking for interactions can reduce the risk of adverse events and support better health outcomes,” said Lindsay Mell, Registrar.
